Monday and Tuesdays are days when you climb up, since they are the<br />beginning or start of your work week. At the end of Wednesday, you've<br />reached the pinnacle of the week, and your work on Thursday and Friday<br />represents climbing down toward the weekend. Also,<br />if you are simply looking at the course of the week, Thursday is the<br />fourth day of the week and in the direct middle, if your week begins on<br />Monday. Yet, many people count the beginning of the week as Sunday, and<br />that makes Wednesday the true middle, whether or not you are using "hump<br />day" in reference to working. <br /><br />Though many may view hump day as a very positive thing, Wednesday gets<br />something of a bad rap at times. It was also stated on the Google website that the founders have been known to say the company is not serious about anything but search. <br /><br /> <br /><br /> <br /><br /> <br /><br /> I was curious to see how work could take place in an environment that is filled with large toy balls, connect links, foosball tables and whimsical lava lamps. So I began watching some of the inside videos of Google. Here, I found that Google works with only the best. Their employees range from students straight out of college, to entrepreneurs that have been in the business for over 25 years. On top of having some of the top people in the corporation, Google has benefits of the job that are unreal. Benefits include everything from your basic health benefits, 401K and holiday pay, to vacation time (with the 1st year starting at 15 days), 12 weeks paid maternity leave, parental leave, a take-out benefit and even back-up childcare. The list goes on. On the job itself, employee's are even offered free lunch and dinner and an on-site doctor. Although, the Top Ten Reasons to Work at Google list, located on the Google website is modest in wording, most of us can see from the list of "perks", that working for Google is more than just a "blast". It could possibly be considered, a life-changing, experience. For most of us, working at Google is a dream. <br /><br /> <br /><br /> <br /><br />Another company I found, while googling the web is Pixar. They are creative both inside and out. I guess you can imagine it would be hard to design animations like Nemo and WALL-E, in a boring workspace? With Pixar, workspaces are a little different. Instead of back to back cubicles and typical square offices, Pixar is full of huts and garden sheds. You will also find pieces of art that you probably wouldn't find in most work places. It is all full of vibrant colors and themes of the ocean and beyond! Getting more technical on us would be the ultimate computing room! Welcome to Renderfarm. Pixar has a computer room like no other. It is told to be blazing with bright, blinking neon lights. <br /><br /> <br /><br /> <br /><br /> <br /><br /> Among some of the "extras" featured, are the café and game room, best of all, the well-known cereal room. There is also an atrium created for employee's on their break time. This allows them to discuss ideas, while in an even more relaxing environment. Oh, and don't forget to check out their state-of-the-art screening room! It can wound.<br /><br />Each of us reacts in one of two ways, either by getting pissed off and<br />hating the company we used to love, or by blaming ourselves in what can<br />be called a state of numbness.<br /><br />These wounds deserve every bit of healing we have. However, because our<br />financial situation may depend on sweeping the pain aside and getting<br />another job as quickly as possible, we might need a strategy of getting<br />past this stage.<br /><br />For those of you who can't afford to wait 3 months to regroup, lick the<br />wounds and find your emotional footing again, I offer these simple speed<br />coping tips.<br /><br /> <br /><br />1. Stop the Story: Stop replaying the day you got the pink slip. Stop<br />repeating the story that is upsetting you. Instead, replace it with what<br />you need to do right now.<br /><br /> <br /><br />2. Stop and Breath: Calm down. You can never get anywhere if your mind<br />is still in a fighting mode or if you are numb. Wake up in the morning<br />and count 10 breaths. Allow your mind to come back down.<br /><br /> <br /><br />3. Allow the Parts: Allow the part of you that is angry to be angry - on<br />the weekend when you can afford it. Allow that part of you that is sad<br />or afraid to feel that way, after 5 PM when you've completed your job<br />search tasks for the day.<br /><br /> <br /><br />4. Let it Out: Find new ways to channel the emotion. If you punch, then<br />punch a punching bag. If you shout, then shout in the car on the<br />highway. If you cry, then give yourself space to do that. Here is what I keep in my kit:<br /><br />A sewing kit. This was purchased at the dollar store, and contains a<br />needle, several threads in common colors, a spare button and a safety<br />pin. It is useful for quick clothing emergencies.<br /><br />An instant stain remover. These come in either cloth packets or as a<br />liquid. They won't make your clothes look absolutely clean, but they<br />will camouflage most stains without leaving the tell-tale water marks of<br />a quick bathroom "wash-up".<br /><br />Basic medical supplies. I keep a small container filled with my favorite<br />pain killers, sinus tablets, and a migraine pill. I also have several<br />bandages in there, after discovering that no one knew where the office<br />first aid kit was as I was dripping blood from a really nasty papercut.<br />There are also a few cough drops to be found, as well as a packet of<br />herbal tea for soothing throats.<br /><br />A small toolkit. This is currently a nicely-packaged job with small<br />pliers, a small pocket knife and a set of small screwdrivers. Before I<br />received this kit (a gift), I kept a small screwdriver that reversed to<br />flat and Phillips heads, as well as needle-nose pliers. These tools have<br />come in handy when popping computer cases open, installing hardware,<br />opening up microphone jacks, and stripping wires to make a cable end.<br /><br />All of us have favorites. One co-worker keeps a portable television in<br />his desk to check on weather emergencies. Another keeps a stock of<br />herbal medicines she uses. If the Web site you're trying<br />to view uses JavaScript, you may run into a script related error, which<br />triggers the "Done, but with errors on page" message. It is usually<br />generated by an error in the site's code and unless you have access to<br />that code, you probably won't be able to fix the error yourself. Once<br />the problem hits a Web site's code, only the developers of the site can<br />get in and fix it. It looks like this, by the way:<br /><br /> <br /><br />However, when that error pops up, you should still be able to see most<br />of the site. Just keep in mind that some of its parts may not function<br />correctly. You might have a missing image or animation here or there,<br />but most of the site should still be visible. Now, I know some of you<br />may be worried about the error affecting your computer. You may be<br />thinking that it's going to harm your PC. Well, I assure you it won't.<br />The problem lies within that Web site only and there's no way it could<br />damage your computer. Plus, if you go and visit other sites, you'll see<br />that they load up just fine. And once the creators of the other site fix<br />their code, that one will be viewable again as well.<br /><br />In addition, if you're a Web site designer or editor yourself, you'll<br />want to keep an eye on your site and make sure the "Done, but with<br />errors on page" message doesn't pop up at any time. If it does, just go<br />in and look through your source code. The problem usually comes from an<br />improper syntax, an incomplete code or a script that is placed in the<br />wrong HTML section. Just take a look at those things and you should be<br />able to fix the error rather quickly. Then your site will be back up and<br />running the way it should be.<br /><br />As you can see, this error message isn't one to panic about. It's<br />unfortunate that it happens, but there's not really anything you can do<br />about it yourself. If there's any way you can contact the designer of<br />the Web site, do so. Most of us zoom right into the resume for a quick scan of the candidate and avoid the cover letter whenever possible. Why should we read two different documents that are basically trying to say the same thing? When we have 100 resumes to read, why read 200 documents instead of just 100?<br /><br /><br />When do I read cover letters? <br /><br /><br />§ Writing intensive position (Technical writing, Marketing Communications, etc)<br /><br />§ Hiring manager specifically requests them<br /><br />§ Candidate says something ridiculous or interesting that makes me want to read further<br /><br />§ Cover letter is sent in the body of the e-mail, NOT as an attachment<br /><br /><br />What do the experts say? <br /><br /><br />Recruiters - Recruiters that work in high volume environments will say they are too busy to read them. Unless their internal or external client is asking for a resume, I doubt it will be read.<br /><br />HR - People in HR that have some recruiting duties will most likely say they always read them. Maybe it is because of their HR blood and a commitment to process, process, process. Also, HR folks that also recruit sometimes work for companies that aren't experiencing volume in hiring, or else their company would hire a recruiter, or another recruiter to handle it. This may mean they will spend a few more minutes to read each cover letter since it might be the only opening.<br /><br />Professional Resume Writers - They will tell you that it's absolutely necessary to have a strong cover letter with your resume. Not only do they make money off of it, but they also do make some great points, or have seen candidates hired simply for having a well-written cover letter.<br /><br /><br />My suggestion...<br /><br /><br />You clearly need one. Everyone has their own opinion, so my suggestion is to write up a quick cover letter that you can easily tweak around for each position. Also, stop sending your cover letter as an attachment, I hate that. I don't want to click on more than one thing when I open up your e-mail. Simply put, Larry and<br />Balky come from different worlds and learn to co-exist.<br /><br /><br />Coexisting with your co-workers<br /><br /><br />Who do you spend more time with, your family or your co-workers? I ask<br />those of you who work from home to kindly not answer this. For the<br />rest of you, I'm almost positive you're seeing much more of your<br />colleagues at work than your spouse, partner, kids, dog, paper boy, and<br />Oprah. With this much time spent together, we need to find a way to be<br />friends, or at least coexist. <br /><br />We never know what to expect when meeting co-workers for the first time.<br />Usually, they are nothing like us, they come form a different culture or<br />background, and have their share of annoying quirky behaviors. Even<br />with these obvious differences, sometimes we are able to mesh and make<br />friends with these folks. In some situations it's not so easy, and we<br />simply need to find a way to just coexist, because our career depends on<br />it. And my suggestion is? <br /><br /><br />Become Perfect Strangers<br /><br /><br />When you realize there are clear and annoying differences between you<br />and a co-worker, make a strong effort to become buddies. Ask that<br />person to go to lunch with you, spend a few minutes at their desk just<br />chatting. Developing a real friendship probably won't happen, but just<br />including them in your plans can take the business relationship far. And we'll explain why<br />you need to be cautious about closing or deleting these alerts, even<br />when you know they're fake.<br /><br /> <br /><br />Not long ago, a colleague was conducting Internet research when -- pop!<br />-- a yellow triangle appeared on his screen, warning that his computer<br />had been infected by dangerous spyware. The alert looked real. He<br />thought it was "issued" by his security software maker. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Still, he was skeptical. Using his mouse, he closed the alert by<br />pressing the "x" in the window's upper right-hand corner. <br /><br /> <br /><br />That was his first -- and last -- mistake! <br /><br /> <br /><br />Pop-up ads began sprouting everywhere, his screen froze, and none of his<br />programs were accessible -- even after rebooting. Basically, his<br />computer was disabled, and he spent hours on the phone with tech support<br />to correct the problems. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Welcome to the world of fake anti-virus, anti-spyware programs. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Despite what happened to our friend, it's not that common to encounter<br />hackers who simply want to harm your computer with fake anti-virus<br />programs. <br /><br /> <br /><br />In most cases, you'll confront scammers who want to scare you into<br />buying "rogue" security software by making you think your computer is<br />infected. ("Rogue" means software of unknown or questionable origin, or<br />doubtful value.) <br /><br /> <br /><br />In fact, fake "virus alerts" often mimic ones displayed by brand-name<br />products. <br /><br /> <br /><br />For example: "Your Computer Has Been Infected!" That's what some pop-ups<br />and phony alerts will say, hoping you'll download fake anti-virus<br />software. Don't be fooled! <br /><br /> <br /><br />Meanwhile, ID thieves will use the fake software to gather your personal<br />and financial information -- for their own ID theft scams or for sale to<br />others. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Fake Virus Scam Tactics<br /><br />Fake virus alerts are usually generated by a Trojan -- a program that<br />takes control of your computer -- after you open an email attachment,<br />click on a pop-up advertisement or visit a particular website. (Adult<br />sites are special favorites.) <br /><br /> <br /><br />Read more about Trojans on our page on computer Viruses. <br /><br /> <br /><br />If you run programs that provide file-sharing information -- including<br />some instant messenger (IM) applications -- your computer might be<br />remotely accessed by scammers, hackers and identity thieves. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Sometimes, the Trojan creates "false positive" readings, making you<br />think viruses and spyware have infected your computer, even though<br />nothing has. In other cases, scam software actually implants malicious<br />code into your computer, especially if you request a "free virus scan." <br /><br /> <br /><br />In other words, some peddlers of fake anti-virus software actually<br />design the viruses, spyware and malware that their software is supposed<br />to detect! <br /><br /> <br /><br />What to Look For Rogue Spyware <br /><br />*Rogue anti-virus/spyware programs often generate more "alerts" than the<br />software made by reputable companies. <br /><br /> <br /><br />*You may be bombarded with pop-ups, even when you're not online. <br /><br /> <br /><br />*High-pressure sales copy will try to convince you to buy RIGHT NOW! <br /><br /> <br /><br />*If you've been infected, your computer may dramatically slow down. <br /><br /> <br /><br />*Other signs of infection include: new desktop icons; new wallpaper, or<br />having your default homepage redirected to another site. <br /><br /> <br /><br />(Mac users: if you run Windows using Boot Camp, Parallels or VMWare,<br />these tips apply to you. However, at the time of this writing, Mac OSX<br />does not have these problems.) <br /><br /> <br /><br />Fake Anti Virus Prevention Tips<br /><br />1. Use Firefox as your browser rather than Internet Explorer. <br /><br /> <br /><br />2. Keep your computer updated with the latest anti-virus and<br />anti-spyware software, and be sure to use a good firewall. <br /><br /> <br /><br />3. Never open an email attachment unless you are POSITIVE about the<br />source. <br /><br /> <br /><br />4. Do NOT click on any pop-up that advertises anti-virus or anti-spyware<br />software, especially a program promising to provide every feature known<br />to mankind. (Also remember: the fakes often mimic well-known brands such<br />as Grisoft AVG, Norton and McAfee.) <br /><br /> <br /><br />5. If a virus alert appears on your screen, do NOT touch it. Don't use<br />your mouse to eliminate or scan for viruses, and DON'T use your mouse to<br />close the window. Instead, hit control + alt + delete to view a list of<br />programs currently running. Delete the "rogue" from the list of running<br />programs, and call your computer maker's phone or online tech support<br />service to learn if you can safely use your computer. <br /><br /> <br /><br />6. Do not download freeware or shareware unless you know it's from a<br />reputable source. We use Download.com and VersionTracker. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Unfortunately, freeware and shareware programs often come bundled with<br />spyware, adware or fake anti-virus programs. <br /><br /> <br /><br />7. Avoid questionable websites. Some sites may automatically download<br />malicious software onto your computer. <br /><br /> <br /><br />8. Reset your current security settings to a higher level. <br /><br /> <br /><br />9. Although fake software may closely resemble the real thing, it's<br />rarely an exact match. Look for suspicious discrepancies. <br /><br /> <br /><br />10. Check out this list of rogue/fake anti-virus and anti-spyware<br />products. <br /><br /> <br /><br />http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm <br /><br /> <br /><br />If your computer is infected by rogue software, stop work and contact<br />your computer manufacturer's tech-support hotline. Don't keep using the<br />computer. This may further damage your machine and provide identity<br />thieves with more information about you. <br /><br /> <br /><br />Use of fake anti-virus, anti-spyware software is a fast-growing scam,<br />especially as more people become aware of the dangers of spyware, adware<br />and malware.
